Encouragement for Caregivers

by Nell E. Noonan
Hardcover
Caregiving Older Adults

Caregivers have a front-row seat to suffering. Helping someone (most likely a close loved one) through disease, pain, frailty, and death exacts a tremendous toll.

In the midst of caregiving, we often feel inadequate, fatigued, and overwhelmed with despair. The thought of reaching out for help does not occur to many caregivers, but we cannot go it alone-we need to find ways to connect with others. Self-care is also critical to our mental and physical health.

Nell Noonan offers 150 honest and authentic devotions from her own experience. Think of these readings as God's embrace. They will encourage you and give you the strength to make it through another day.

Understanding caregiving as a spiritual pilgrimage is important in caring for ourselves. "God is with us in the tears and the laughter, the brokenness and the holiness, the exhaustion and the whispers of resurrection," Noonan writes. When you pause daily to listen to your life, you will discover that God is there, and you are not alone.

Reviews

I am reading Not Alone for the 4th time and have given copies of it to other caregivers. As the caregiver to my husband, who has Alzheimer's, I have found this book to be a source of help, humor, and spiritual grounding. We also use it in a caregivers support group at our church, First United Methodist in Corsicana, Texas. Thank you, Nell Noonan, for sharing your experiences and insights.

Not Alone: Encouragement for Caregivers is a much-needed book for the growing number of caregivers in our society. Nell Noonan speaks out of her experience caring for her husband, and the pages of this devotional book are full of meaningful thoughts for all caregivers. A cursory glance at the Contents page points to the daily challenges that caregivers face, but also the joys that can accrue from caring for a loved one. She relates her meditations to scripture, predominantly from the Psalms, the Gospels and the letters of Paul. Nell Noonan is realistic about the endless burden of the 36-hour day for caregivers, but offers a spiritual support that provides incredible strength. I will have no hesitancy in making caregivers whom I serve aware of this book.
