Big change starts with small acts.

What if the most profound changes in justice ministry come not from grand gestures, but from the small, faithful acts we practice every day? Micro Practices for Justice Ministry is a powerful resource that challenges the idea that only big, sweeping actions lead to real change. In this inspiring book, you'll discover how small, everyday acts—done well and consistently—can transform justice ministry in profound ways. Drawing on interviews with 40 pastors from diverse ministry contexts, this book highlights how micro practices—simple, intentional actions—have the power to reshape communities and advance justice.

Rooted in scripture and theology, Micro Practices for Justice Ministry presents hundreds of actionable practices that can be easily integrated into everyday ministry. From one-on-one conversations to small group efforts, these seemingly small actions, when practiced consistently, build momentum that drives meaningful change. Each practice is shared through engaging narrative stories, bringing the experiences of real pastors to life and demonstrating the lasting impact of doing the "small stuff" with intention.

Perfect for clergy, laity, and community organizers alike, this book offers both practical tools and spiritual encouragement for those committed to justice. Whether you're leading a congregation, working in your community, or studying ministry, this book will help you see that real transformation often starts with the smallest of steps.

Reviews

"For any who consider practicing justice as integral to Christian discipleship and ministry, this book is a vast storehouse of insight and inspiration. Through analysis gleaned from attentive listening to diverse and creative practitioners of justice, Tex Sample has gifted us with an invaluable, practical resource for doing justice in these turbulent and polarized times." —Bishop Kenneth L. Carder, Ruth W. and A. Morris Williams Distinguished Professor Emeritus, The Practice of Christian Ministry, Duke Divinity School

"Approaching how pastors sustain the hard work of justice ministry through the 'little things' they do to connect with others and remain faithful to their call gives us a rich resource for our own ministries. Sample does it again—getting to the heart of what can sustain us while encouraging us to take bolder steps to help bring in the new heaven and new earth." —Emilie M. Townes, E. Rhodes and Leona B. University Professor of Womanist Ethics and Society and Gender and Sexuality Studies, Vanderbilt University Divinity School

"Nothing Tex Sample ever does leaves you feeling settled. This is particularly true of his writing, which always pokes, prods, and stops you in your tracks. Tex makes you really think and feel and, maybe most importantly, act. Micro Practices of Justice Ministry does all this and more. Tex interviews an amazingly diverse array of justice practitioners in an effort to uncover how they do what they do. 'Little things' is the refrain throughout and vignette by vignette you begin to say to yourself, 'I can do this! This inspires me to wage justice in the world.' Tex helps you understand what it means to be a partner with God in God's good work. Read this, and then go and do likewise." —Paul Wesley Chilcote, Director of the Centre for Global Wesleyan Theology at Wesley House, Cambridge, UK

"If you are looking for an antidote for cynicism or despair about the state of the contemporary church, this book is for you. Without any hint of romanticism or sentimentalism, Sample wittily, wisely, and judiciously collects and narrates the work of profound witnesses, showing us how small things make for significant changes. The fruit of his years of work in ministry settings, attention to oral cultures, and a testimony to his love for Jesus, this is a splendid work that should be read by anyone who knows the church is in a mess right now and seeks a faithful way to the other side." —D. Stephen Long, Cary M. Maguire University Professor of Ethics, Southern Methodist University

"Tex Sample, well known theological professor and author, has consistently integrated scholarship with community involvement and justice ministry. In this remarkable book Sample reports on interviews with dozens of men and women who like him are engaged in justice ministry. Anyone sharing in this calling will find these candid responses a vital help in developing spiritual, theologically based and pragmatic practices that inform and help to sustain faithful ministry in the public sphere." —Neal Fisher, Retired President of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary
